Prestige Shantiniketan Building Collapse

Why do people invest in property at premium price with top builders?

  • Trust that apartment delivered will be of highest quality.
  • Confidence that the project will be delivered on time.
  • Hope that the hard earned money will be invested in right channel.
  • Faith that you will not be cheated.

Few portion of Under construction building collapsed in Prestige Shantiniketan. This incidence has shaken my confidence with these builders. I just hope that Brigade has taken utmost care on construction quality and I wish that government does proper inspection before releasing occupancy certificate.

BANGALORE: Four persons were injured and another 100 construction workers had a providential escape when a part of a 15-storeyed concrete structure under construction of the Prestige group crashed at Whitefield here on Thursday.

The block which collapsed is part of the 20 blocks under construction by Prestige in a joint venture with Shantiniketan. The top floor slab which collapsed first was laid only a few days ago.

The police told The Hindu that the accident occurred around 5 p.m. when a small portion of the top floor collapsed resulting in the slab of the floor below it collapsing in a short while. Owing to sheer weight, the slabs of the lower floors collapsed subsequently, all in a span of 50 minutes, although the embedded steel rods prevented the slabs from falling in a heap.

The injured were identified as Srinivas (20), Dasharat (25), Mahendra Prasad (25) and Dadudar (30). Dadudar is said to be a native of Bihar and the other three residents of Kadugodi and surrounding areas in Bangalore. They sustained minor injuries when they were running out of the building, and were initially taken to Vydehi Hospital and after first aid were reportedly taken away by the site engineers for further medical attention. The workers were evacuated from the site. Complete information relating to the building collapse is yet to be made available to the police. The Prestige Shantiniketan complex comprises several towers, each of them of several storeys and located in the vicinity of the International Technology Park. There is no information on the strength of the work force at the construction site. A Malaysian construction company (IJM) was building the superstructure for the Prestige Group, which has undertaken the joint venture project with Shantiniketan (Chaitanya Properties) of D.K. Audikesavalu.

Nayeem Noor, vice-president (public relations) of the Prestige group said the collapse occurred after the top floor slab was cast. “The super structure is intact and there are no casualties.” A head count at the construction site has been conducted and it is confirmed that there is no casualty including injury suffered by any person, he added.

Enough time to escape

N.M. Nachappa, security guard at the site, told The Hindu that “the entire building crashed in 50 minutes. There was enough time for all the workers to escape.”

According to an eyewitness, around 4.50 p.m., the slabs of the building started to collapse. Then there were around 120 people, including women and children. “Immediately after the incident, the workers at the construction site had left. Very soon they were sent to isolated places in a few trucks.”

“A Few officers, perhaps from the contractors side, had shifted all the workers to some other location immediately. They instructed the security guard and other workers at the construction site not to answer the media or the police,” he said.

The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike has taken a serious note of the accident. Directions have been issued to stop construction pending an inquiry.

Several superstructures are under construction in the vicinity of the ITPL.

One should investigate and follow up with their respective builders on Quality Process followed before occupying the apartment. We also need to do our part whether we have the insurance to cover natural disasters and accidents and whether there are devices available to alert and protect you in case of fires.

  2. I wouldn't be very concerned. Such accidents could happen in any project. An accidental impact at the topmost floor (freshly cast) resulted in it giving way and coming down heavily on the lower floor and the weight of two floors on to the third lower floor and so on. In all this cascading effect, the super structure is still intact - that is a relief. The structure was not a handed over building where it just fell apart - it's clear that it's a result of an accident. But I will still wait for an official report on the investigations.

  3. Its what the chinese markets did to the toy industry. Just flood th emarket with mushrooms of high rises. cheap grade materials/ no adherance to basic structural design safety norms.

So you have these big names, doing just sales and marketing and outsourcing everything to some lesser known PMC firms...
And given the nonchanlance of the govt. officials in detailed inspection of constructions, many such issues might crop up.

Thankfully this came to light during construction...
The structure couldn't bear teh weight of a concrete block ? what nonsense. skipped the basic 'strength of material' class ?
Govt should impose strict regulations on these high rise.
construction companies should have firm safety regulations and design verified by structural enginers from research institutes.
i know several government bridge construction project designs need to get approved by professors at IITs. who conduct a impact analysis and tensile strength analysis.
Why not for the private players?

Is the construction process documented? daily activities recorded, to investigate what coul dhave gone wrong?

All these bodies / associations such as KOAPA ect..are just a farce if they cannot impose upon themselves to do a responsible job.

  4. First of all, this is a big sign. Will all these big construction companies and land grabbers please stop raping our city and put an end to this mindless destruction of beautiful Bangalore? All these companies - Prestige, Raheja, Embassy, Ranka etc were good and decent and honest about 20 years ago. Until their greed got the better of them. Now, they will do anything to make a few extra bucks including cutting corners on quality and producing low quality low class ghettos sold at exorbitant prices. ENOUGH. enough said enough done. STOP the systematic destruction of our Garden City. STOP pulling down our trees to erect buildings instead. Bring back our clean bangalore.

  6. How do we trust the quality of construction of flats, when such things happen with big brand like prestige.

Image the plight of people who had recently bought a flat there in shanti niketan.

People spend their hard earned money and take hefty loans to own a house and this is what they get in return.

Agree with the previous post, these big builders have become greedy over the years and now, whether it is mantri or puravankara, constructoin quality is something we cant trust.

  7. Incidentally a similar subject of apartment collapse is being dealt with in the daily kannada serial 'mukta mukta'. It exposes how politicians / builders are cheating people and also highlights how some good samaritans fight for the justice.

  8. News in The Hindu.

BANGALORE: Twenty-one days after the collapse of the Prestige Shantiniketan, the 15-storeyed building under construction in Whitefield here, the Bangalore City Police recovered decomposed human remains from the rubble on Wednesday morning.

Workers clearing the debris discovered two legs with the rest of the body missing, possibly pulverised in the collapse. The police suspect the remains to be that of Munna Katua (23), a construction worker from the Kendrapada district in Orissa, who has been missing since the collapse.

However, to confirm the identity, the Kadugodi police, who are investigating the case, plan to send the remains to the Forensic Science Laboratory for a DNA test.

“The body was under 600 tonnes of debris which the Prestige Group took 21 days to clear. We had pressured them to clear the debris by issuing notices. Except two legs we could not recover anything. Other parts were badly smashed and even we attempted to recover them by scraping the concrete slabs,” said an officer of Bangalore City Police (Airport Sub-Division).

A team of construction workers were clearing the debris, under the supervision of Kadugodi police inspector M.G. Shankar Narayana when they spotted the remains. A pair of trousers was recovered in which the police found a piece of paper containing phone numbers of Munna’s family and friends.

Jamadar Mallik, friend and co-worker of Munna, identified the trousers. “We used to share our sorrow and happiness. I have lost my friend,” he wept.

The block that collapsed is one of the 20 blocks under construction by Prestige in a joint venture with Shantiniketan. It collapsed on October 23.

The Kadugodi police had arrested six persons, including Prestige Group vice-president Ashok Sapru, company work manager Murlidhar, project engineer Nanda Kishore and project vice-president Ravi Hoskote

  12. Terrible state of affairs.
    i bought at INR2400/sqft in 2007
Last month many investors exited at 2100psf
The building is still incomplete. It will take another 8-10 months to give finishing touches.
Prestige Executives are careless enough to say we can deliver by december. I can vouch for sure, none of them put their hard earned money in this pet cheat project of theirs.

    All those Radissons &

I hope it doesnt fall to 2005 levels of 1750psf

I dont know where on earth Prestige hires their sales team from. Their site says 4500psf? Nut Cases.

Besides there is going to be an investigation by SEBI on how promoters misued the funds of 700Crores.

Does it make sense to exit at whatever price i can get?? Learning cost

  16. Have you seen the masterplan..detailing of PSN?. Brigade metropolis can't be compared with PSN. Commercial space in PSN is bigger than ITPB! but got separate entry /exit unlike BM. Wait and watch..soon PSN will be the best residences and will be a landmark on its own right.

  17. First there was a Tower Falling,Then there was a collapse near ground floor then there was fire in commercial tower .God save people who will work here why are rentals so low here??? (25-30 rs/sqft) since it's substandard

  19. Prestige is nothing but high profile "mestries", who are better of selling peanuts on streets.
Their attitude is careless, quality of work is a disaster, ethics is zero and language is of a goonda. Never ever think of buying any property with these guys. You don't realize what kind of a s**t hole you will get into. Just sheet burden on the planet that such a company and people exist.
