The BBMP standing committee on major works has been cracking the whip on builders encroaching upon stormwater drains (SWD). On Tuesday, the committee temporarily stopped work by Sobha Developers on Tumkur Road near Peenya.
It may be recalled that the committee, headed by Mr H. Ravindra, had alleged that Brigade Gateway at Rajajinagar and G Staad Hotel on Vittal Mallya Road was being constructed on a stormwater drain obstructing flow of water and causing problems to people residing in the vicinity.
During an inspection on Tuesday, Mr Ravindra said that the builder had closed the stormwater drain and diverted it unscientifically. “Actually, the SWD was running through the middle of the project site. But the builder has been constructing a huge apartment on the drain, which has been diverted unscientifically. They have also diverted the main Vrishabavathi Valley 60 feet away from its original location affecting natural gravity and the flow of water,” said Mr Ravindra.
The drain connects Peenya and Chikka Bidarakal lake. Since the drain has been diverted, flooding during the monsoon has become a major problem in this area, he added.
As per the Karnataka Municipal Council (KMC) Act, diversion of the drain amounts to violation.
But Sobha Developers AGM (Projects) Vishagan said, “We purchased the land through public auction from Deepak Cables and have taken up the project after proper approvals from the BDA. A few days ago, Mayor S. K. Nataraj and BBMP Commissioner Siddaiah had visited and ordered a survey. Now, the major works standing committee has also come for inspection.
Mr Ravindra ordered eviction of encroachment on the drain and to recover the wasteland which has been illegally occupied by the builder. Sobha Developers Liason Officer H. G. Sandesh said, “We have strengthened the road next to the building. There is no encroachment of the SWD and the road, as alleged. We will provide all the documents to the BBMP”.
